ISO 639-6

ISO 639-6 refers to the international standard ISO/CD 639-6: 2007? Codes for the representation of names of languages -- Part 6: Alpha-4 representation for comprehensive coverage of language variation.
ISO 639-6 will use 4-letter codes to represent a wide range of language entities, including dialects and variant orthographies in addition to individual languages. Thus it is a successor to ISO 639-3, which uses 3-letter codes and excludes dialects and variant orthographies. ISO 639-6 is a draft as of June, 2007, and thus probably has months of work before it becomes a final standard.
OmegaWiki intends for ISO 639-6, Codes for the representation of names of languages -- Part 6: Alpha-4 representation for comprehensive coverage of language variation, to replace ISO 639-3 as the primary list of language identifiers.
